What Are Some Foundations I Can Start Today?
You do not need to wait for lab results or order a cabinet full of supplements to start supporting your health. There are simple things you can begin working on today.
Start your meals with protein. Eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, meat, poultry, fish, seafood, or a quality protein powder can all help you build meals around adequate protein rather than treating it as an afterthought.
Eat more whole foods. Focus most of your grocery cart on foods that still resemble food. Prioritize quality proteins, fruits, vegetables, fermented foods, healthy fats, and whole food carbohydrates such as potatoes, oats, rice, quinoa, and sourdough.
Add fiber and variety. Berries, kiwi, vegetables, avocado, chia seeds, flax, oats, nuts, seeds, beans, and lentils can all contribute different types of fiber. Instead of trying to overhaul your diet overnight, add one or two different plant foods to your day.
Drink water. Keep hydration simple and consistent. If you exercise heavily, sweat frequently, or spend time in the heat, your electrolyte needs may also increase.
Get outside in the morning. Natural outdoor light early in the day helps support your circadian rhythm. Take your coffee outside, walk around the block, or simply spend a few minutes outdoors after waking.
Walk every day. Walking is one of the simplest ways to add movement to your day. A short walk after meals is an easy place to start.
Strength train. Maintaining muscle matters for metabolic health, bone health, physical function, and healthy aging. You do not need an extreme workout. Start with resistance training that is appropriate for your current ability.
Protect your sleep. Give yourself enough time to sleep, keep your schedule relatively consistent, reduce bright light later at night, and be mindful of afternoon and evening caffeine.
Create space to recover. More is not always better. Rest, spend time outside, connect with people you enjoy, and give your body opportunities to recover from work, exercise, and everyday stress.
Take a look at your supplements. Ask yourself why you are taking each one. If you cannot answer that question, it may be worth reviewing whether you actually need it.
You do not need to do all of these perfectly.
Pick two or three and start there.
The foundations are not flashy, but they are often where the biggest opportunities are hiding.
